Volpe-gate gets even bigger

h/t to BBS.

The Globe & Mail has done some futher digging... you can now almost DOUBLE the figures for Apotex's donations to Joe Volpe... to $108,000, roughly 70% of all his campaign donations. All $152,700 for his campaign was donated on the same date, April 20. Did he have some fundraiser on that day, or could it be that all 29 donations are connected?

The new rules make it illegal for a group to act in collusion to bypass the existing financing rules. Let's see... 20 people, all connected to one company, each making the maximum donation possible.

Sounds like collusion to me. But then again, I'm just a novice at such things. The Liberal Party of Canada, the "pros" say they have no intention of investigating.
The Liberal Party insisted yesterday that all of the donations to Mr. Volpe's campaign followed the rules.

"These were clearly reported by everyone and that's because they were within the rules," said interim Liberal leader Bill Graham.

The party's national director, Steven MacKinnon, agreed.

"We have absolutely every procedure possible in place to both catch and correct any provisions of the Elections Act that appear to have been contravened, and we don't see any in this case," he said.

Ahhh, good then, the liberal party has investigated itself and once again found itself innocent.
Now all we need is Scott Reid telling us what we think and all will be well.

The really sad part in this is that Gwyn Morgan was found wanting in the ethics department by the like of none other than Mr. Joe Volpe.

When are Canadians going to wake up and give these Liberal crooks the boot?

Hey Ryan, that's a REALLY good point that I missed myself!

What a hypocrite! And he gave a thumbs down to Morgan AFTER taking these "donations".

Canada, we made a good start on Jan. 23... next time, let's finish the job.

Just for a little perspective on this whole thing:

I think its important to remember that although Volpe's actions are highly suspect, I don't beleive they technichally violate current elections laws.

But maybe Pat Martin's investigation will turn something up, most times Liberals are pretty good at covering their asses though.

From what I understand, there are provisions in the legislation that are to prevent "collusion"... an example of such would be a bunch of people, all connected to one company, getting together to channel funds from a rich company owner to a candidate, thus allowing him to donate more than he could otherwise legally.

Hey, hang on a sec... sound familiar? ;-)

Suspiciously like Stockwell Day's attempt to use the Religious Right to create some sort of Christian Tyranny.

Hey Blake, I don't recall any accusations of illegal fundraising by Day.

I personally think he was pretty smart, being able to capitalize on a massive, ready-made network and being able to make good use of it.

And everybody who doesn't hate Stockwell Day - a large majority - recognizes that to use religious machinations as kingmakers never works out too well.

The man's a piece of cheese and deserves 10,000 times more scorn than Volpe. Even Prseton Manning tore him a new one in his last book. Only a "Defend-Christianity-At-All-Costs" mindset can see the faintest thing redeemable in that plank's actions.

Possibly the funniest, and most true thing I've read all day.

Liberal corruption sets the gold standard for corruption in Canada, they steal more millions than the great train robbery but don't even have to flee the country!

That's impressive from a criminals point of view. And perhaps a good reason for not throwing Liberals in jail - other prisoners might pick up the tricks of the Liberal trade, at least the quick learners will before they're paroled early.

Your right there are provisions that stipulate that all donation moneys must be the donator's own money. If these Apotex family members are found to have been given the money to donate then this would constitute an illegal campaign contribution.

In other news, Pat Martin seems to be gearing down his calls for an investigation after being threatened by Joe's lawyers.
At least we now know there is a limit to the NDP's sactimonious posturing.

Actually, if you read the text of Pat Martin's reply, he was able to "clarify" his statement to the press, and in the way he worded it, took another stab at Volpe with the same "clarified" accusation! Read!

Yesterday, Mr. Volpe's lawyer, Steven Polak, sent a letter to Mr. Martin demanding that he retract “false, malicious, and slanderous statements about Mr. Volpe and contributions to his leadership campaign.”

Mr. Martin met reporters less than an hour later to make a “clarification.”

“When I came out and said that laundering money through your children's bank accounts to circumvent the donation limits of the election act is fraud, I should have said, laundering money through your children's bank accounts to circumvent the donation limits of the Elections Act seems like fraud, and it's up to the Elections Commissioner to determine if what took place is illegal or not,” Mr. Martin said.
