The things you find

If you're not a geek, then this won't interest you in the least. And if you are a geek, it depends on what kind of geek you are as to whether or not you'll care.

Was downloading some trialware from Microsoft, and for kicks, I checked out the top level of the link I was redirected to. And found this...

Here's the link, while it lasts...https://microsoft.order-10.com/

(and for those who think it's not a legit Microsoft site, here's where I was)

SAS Vet Takes on German punks... and wins

This is HILARIOUS.
70-year-old ex-SAS soldier dares to tackle four muggers and wins

A 70-year-old former British soldier who fought guerillas in Aden and Triad gangs in Hong Kong showed four muggers how it doesn't pay to mess with the SAS.

Douglas O'Dell is past retirement age but the moves he learned as a volunteer in Britain's toughest regiment half-a-century ago stood him in good stead when he was ambushed near his home in Bielefeld, Germany, by four local toughs.

THWACK! The first mistake came when one of the teenagers grabbed him around the throat and said in German: "Give my your money, grandad, if you don't want to get hurt."

"Bad move," said Douglas. "The only part he got right was grandad. If you're gonna grab someone from behind take their arms and pin them to their waist.

"This joker, I was able to grab his elbow, crouch down and throw him over my shoulder. He landed on his back on a fence and squealed like a stuck pig."

"The last I saw of them they were limping down the pavement like a WW1 trench raiding party who got clobbered," said Douglas.
Now there's one story that you can bet those young punks won't be telling to any of their buddies!

To close to the Americans?

And in other news... isn't it the Liberals who keep accusing us of being too cosy with the Americans? So, let me get this straight... cosying up to and getting political advice from a hard-core Democrat is okay, but when the CPC talks to a Republican, it's a big no-no?

Uh huh... I can see it all so clearly now.

James Heath - cool guy

I was thinking today about an upcoming post... on why I am a Conservative, both politically and in my overall daily outlook. Then I saw this post from Steve Janke, regarding comments made by James Heath, a former spokesman for Jack Layton's NDP.

The gist of it? James says people should quit harping on Harper, and at least give him SOME credit for getting the ball rolling on the Global Warming front. He correctly identifies that Harper has done more on this issue in 8 months than the Liberals did in 12 years.

And he ALSO points out the hypocrisy of many of his fellow colleagues on the left. How folks like Greenpeace and the Sierra Club are attacking Harper for doing the very things that they petitioned the previous Liberal government to do... which, by the way, the Liberals said they would do, then didn't...

Interesting... I don't see James' comments posted ANYWHERE on the Progressive Blogs, the Liblogs, or the Blogging Dippers. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't James considered "one of their own"?

Anyway, it's a good appetizer for my post, coming in the next couple of days. (it's been a busy week... 50+ hours, and not nearly enough sleep...)

HIP, HIP, and HOORAY!
Environmentalist Suzuki to quit spotlight for simple life

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Environmentalist David Suzuki, best known for his television programs on nature and the environment, is ready to step out of spotlight and live the simple life, lamenting that he has not had a greater impact.
No David, aka "Mr. Kyoto"... you've done quite enough already, thanks.

Hard Time

I agree with you whole-heartedly Erin.

One question... why is it that the Liberals are GIVING us (on a silver platter) the campaign issues upon which to win a majority? Anyone have any ideas? These issues of Crime and Punishment, and Accountability, which the Liberal Senate is holding up, are issues that will even win us votes in Toronto of all places! (though maybe not a seat... so much for the old "Tory Toronto" as the Liberals used to call it...)

As for doing hard time... that's what I'm going. Showed up here at work twelve and a half hours ago... yep, I think you could say we've hit a bit of a snag...

Puppy-Gate

And no, I am not talking about some new innovation in backyard fencing.

My two cents... the audio I have heard several times does sound similar to MacKay's voice... but then again, there are many 30-50 year old males on our side of the House that sound similar, so it could have been any of them.

If it was MacKay, then he's put himself in deeper by denying it today in the House. But if it wasn't him, then whoever said it could solve this whole mess by just fessing up and apologizing, plain and simple...

"Mr. Speaker, I rise in the House today to offer my apology to my Honourable colleague in the Opposition. In the heat of the debate last week, I thought I was being clever with my quick comeback to the taunts of the Members opposite. Upon reflection, I recognize that my comment was inappropriate, and for it I apologize. I also apologize to my Honourable colleague the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who was forced to endure much public criticism due to my lack of discretion."

End of story. "Oops, we got it wrong, sorry Peter," and everyone will move on.

Of course, if it was Mr. Mackay, the last paragraph would need to be altered a bit...

"I also wish to apologize to all the Members of this House, whom I have mislead over these last few days. I was ashamed and embarrassed by my outburst, and hoped that this whole matter would simply blow over. I recognize that I was wrong on both of these issues, and I wish to make this matter right by rising today with my sincere, and unequivocal, apology. I am sorry."

Sure, the Opposition will still call for his head on a platter... but at least he'll be able to hold it high, and weather the storm. They'll scream, they'll shout, and the media will soon tire of it, and move on.

And most of the Canadian public will indeed forgive and forget. It was simply a rash off the cuff remark in the middle of a heated exchange... it not like it was treason! (then again, we seem to be fairly forgiving of treason these days... but that's a blog posting for another day...)

Well, we'll wait and see how it all goes down.

Ontario... Yours to Figure Out

...cause I sure can't figure them out! From the Toronto Star:
Ontario Liberals top poll: Election seems McGuinty's to lose, pollster says

Premier Dalton McGuinty's Liberals appear to have weathered recent political problems and hold a comfortable lead over the Progressive Conservatives led by John Tory, a new poll suggests.

The Toronto Star-EKOS Research Associates survey shows the Liberals at 42.4 per cent to the Conservatives' 36.2 per cent with Howard Hampton's New Democrats surging to 19.6 per cent.
New Ontario motto... "Promises made, promises broken... but we'll re-elect them anyway!"

Fortunately, there's a sliver lining in the Frank Graves (the pollster's) comments... "If the economy stays strong — particularly the labour market — I think they'll be very difficult to dislodge."

That's the catch... the labour market has started getting WORSE in Ontario recently, just starting in the last couple of months. With the way things have been going in the auto sector and other industries lately, the labour market ISN'T likely to stay stong. Though only a few are actually out of work at this point, with all the recent layoffs that have been announced by the "Big Three" and other sectors (like at Domtar in Cornwall, and locally at ABB and Imperial Tobacco), there is going to be a sudden deluge of unemployed workers out there. But what's really sad is that it is going to take these thousands of layoffs to wake up the province.

Well, here's to next October 4... only 344 more sleeps!

Stem Cells Everywhere Today

Yes, it's been slow blogging for me lately... busy, busy, busy. Just got some new servers at work, have been to a couple of trade shows, etc. Might be back to normal soon.

As for today's commentary, I'll refer to a story I heard on Global National tonight. Apparently, Canada has attracted a leading American research doctor... in stem cell research.

For the record, I'm not against ALL stem cell research... but I AM 100% against EMBRYONIC stem cell research. Embryonic stem cells are harvested from aborted fetuses. As my regular readers know, I'm against abortion... thus, I'm against harvesting cells from these people (they're not just fertilized eggs, these are living PEOPLE we're murdering) who, once we're done with their bio-matter in the abortion clinic or the lab, are simply being thrown into the garbage.

Come on people... we protect the homeless, we protect children, we protect the elderly... why don't we protect the unborn?

Also on the stem cell front... Rush Limbaugh was a moron for his comments about Micael J. Fox. (but I still hope that Fox's ad does not succeed in unseating the GOP incumbant)

And right now on Global, they're talking again about stem cells... what is it today? What I hate is the fact that the media NEVER differentiates between the various kinds of stem cell research. If they did, and if we could be assured that Canada is not funding embryonic stem cell research, then I could get 100% behind it. But until then, I'm going to keep the issue alive, and seek to limit any increases of funding for this kind of research.

Before you react, I'd LOVE to change that stand, and stand behind this research... but I cannot, and will not, so long as the murder of the unborn is involved.

Let the hate-mail begin... (but if you want to discuss the issue, I'd love to hear from you too)

CTV assumes incorrectly... again

CTV made the following statement today in one of their stories:
"The websites listed at www.bloggingtories.ca have no official ties to the Conservative government.

But in recent weeks, the sites have run the same media talking points as those issued by senior officials in government.

And they have mounted fierce public-relations campaigns against government programs that later wound up being axed or downsized, including the Court Challenges Program - a fund that paid for legal challenges that won new rights for women, minorities, the disabled, and gays and lesbians since the 1970s."
Amm, nice try guys... once again trying to expose a non-existant connection between the Blogging Tories, and the Conservative Party of Canada.

For those of you at CTV who read the Blogging Tories blogs, such as this one, I have an official statement to make:
CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE DENIES ANY LINKS TO THE GOVERNMENT
October 20, 2006

Staff at CTV today accused the author of this website, along with many others, of being unofficial arms of the Conservative Party of Canada... once again digging up false accusations made against us during the last election, stating that we and the Conservative Party of Canada are acting contrary to provisions regarding third party entities in the Elections Act.

Once again, and for the official record, I don't get talking points from anyone inside Canada's New Government. The views expressed here are my own... unless otherwise sourced and credited.

Though I am an active and card-carrying member of the Conservative Party of Canada, I only get the same information that any member of the public is privy to... and not any non-publicized information that members of Canada's New Government are Privy to.

But thanks for coming out anyway.
(and if you caught the pun, you must be a political junkie...)

Thoughts on the Green Plan

Stephen Taylor has a FANTASTIC post on the new Green Plan, and comparing it to the previous non-plans of the previous Liberal government.

What's that old expression? "The road to hell is paved with good intentions"?

The Liberal Party of Canada, and all the other opposition parties, are calling the Tory Green Plan "nothing but hot air". Well, what have we seen in the past? A whole lot of huffing and puffing, and NO CONCRETE ACTION ON THE KYOTO FILE!

Once again, I don't support Kyoto... I think that climate change is a normal process of our ecosystem, and that everything is working in a cyclical fashion. (1700's "Little Ice Age", our current warming period, etc.)

My MAIN disagreement with Kyoto, however, is the part about the transfer of emission credits between nations. WHY ON EARTH WOULD WE SPEND OUR MONEY ON BUYING CREDITS, WHEN WE COULD USE THAT MONEY TO FOSTER TECHNOLOGIES AND PROCESSES THAT WOULD REDUCE OUR GHG EMISSIONS?!?!?!?!?

For the first time in Canadian history, Ottawa is implementing a plan to cut emissions. First of all, yes, the timeframe is long... BUT THE CUTS ARE THERE! They're actually DEEPER than the Kyoto mandated cuts, though over a longer period.

The Liberals can huff and puff about the Green Plan all they want... BUT THEY NEVER, EVER, HAD SET IN MOTION ANY KIND OF PLAN TO DO IT THEMSELVES. In my book, it's what's referred to as "hypocrisy".

More to come this weekend, when I have a better chance to review the document, and put together my thoughts.

Justice DONE

Cudos to our men and women in uniform, who patrol our streets, who seek to keep us safe, and serve to ensure that justice is done when we are wronged.

No details are public yet, but CTV in KW just announced minutes ago that four men were arrested today, in connection with a dispicable home invasion in April 2005, that left a young man near death's door.

That young man was the older brother/son of several friends of mine. (I know the rest of the family well but never knew him personally, as he had moved away from home before I met them) A nice young guy, who had many friends, and no known enemies. Reports at the time were that the attack was one of mistaken identity.

That young man has made a remarkable recovery. The family was told, after he'd been in a coma for about about a month, that his chances were not good. Even if he woke up, they were told that due to his head injuries, he'd be badly disabled.

Well, he just got his drivers license back last week... and bought a new car. He's moving back into his own home likely next month.

A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow. I'll post the details as they are released. An 18-month ordeal is ending another chapter.

Thanks again to our local police services.

Garth Responds

Hot off the press.
Well, this has turned out to be one interesting day. This blog has been melted down a few times over the last couple of hours with Canadians logging on because, I would presume, they’d like to see why it is I have been removed form the Conservative bosom.

Well, knock yourself out. All my words are here. Judge for yourself.

I have said here many times, and consistently since I was elected this last time, that I work for the voters - the people, the taxpayers. After that I heed my party and the political establishment. All are important, of course, but the people come first.

And people, seems to me, want political leaders and MPs who look at every opinion, chew over ever idea, kick every notion, and then decide what’s best. The older I get and the mose people I run into, the more I understand this is not a black-and-white world. Despite the yelling in Question Period. Despite the events of today in the caucus room.

So, being kicked out of the Conservative Party is unfortunate, and I’ll be going back to my riding soon to explain things to those voters who wanted a Tory to represent them. But no party - in fact, none of us - has a lock on perfection. The irony is that I’ve been a Conservative longer than most people who call themselves that these days, and my beliefs have not changed. Idid not leave my party, or my convictions, at the caucus room door.

Now, I’ll be the best MP I can. Count on it.

Methinks this will not be a good thing.

I've had my issues with him in the past, as we're on opposite sides of many issues... but he's a poster-boy for many Red Tories, so this could hurt us in the 905 in a big way.

Here's hoping that they can patch things up.

SCC and Election Results

The Supreme Court is presently hearing arguments for scrapping Section 329 of the Elections Act, which is what prevents the media from broadcasting the results from the polls that have closed in Atlantic Canada before the polls close in BC.

This may come as a surprise to many, but I actually support the concept of Section 329. I don't want the media to be able to report the results early, because that would give voters in BC an unfair advantage. Democracy is about everyone being equal... each person gets one vote, and everyone gets to have their say.

But scrap Section 329, and all voters in BC would have to do is wait until the end of the day, and see how things were shaping up in the rest of the country. If the Liberals were leading, then voters in BC could rush en-masse to the NDP or the Tories, and prevent them from getting a majority. Same deal if the Tories were declared as most likely to win... the left leaning voters could collude to make a wholesale switch to the other left party in order to "stop the neo-Cons", and so on and so forth.

It's undemocratic... it would give a HUGE amount of power to BC, making them Canada's official kingmaker or breaker. The Liberals have continually campaigned on fear in the past, and could use this to boost their numbers, taking away seats that the NDP or the Tories would win otherwise. I don't like it, and I say that Section 329 should be preserved.

So, for the record, I oppose Stephen Harper on this one... he petitioned to scrap Section 329 when he was president of the NCC. (see? I don't blindly back the PM on everything...)

Stephen Taylor Outs Gloria Galloway

Or, more accurately, a reader of his blog outed the fact that the Globe & Mail's Gloria Galloway, Tory-smearer extrodinare, is in fact married to a former Liberal Minister's communications guy.

No wonder she's written so many smear pieces against Mr. Harper... remember the whole "anonymous senior Conservative organizer says Harper will never be Prime Minister" fiasco? (which turned out to be Carol "who's she?" Jamieson)

I wonder if people will now finally stop and take even just a moment to consider the idea that she might be biased... rather than just dismissing the accusation right off the bat? Just read her work people, THEN decide.

Bob Rae: "RAISE GAS TAXES"

Bob Rae has announced his solution to the traffic problems in Toronto...
Drivers will have to pay traffic congestion charges and higher prices for gas and parking if Canada is to reduce gridlock and pollution, Liberal leadership hopeful Bob Rae said Friday."
Yet one more reason Ontario voters, especially those in the "905" will never again support Bob Rae...

But of course, I'm sure the 416er's will be all over this one. Doesn't matter to me. There are only THREE seats the Libs can pick up in the 416, and one of them belongs to Jack Layton.

However, in the 905-belt, which typically makes or breaks a majority, there are about 10-15 that are up for the Tories to take from the Liberals.

So, here's my endorsement for Bob Rae's plan!
(Besides, what do I care? I bike to work...)

Liberals Dividing Families?

Y-I-K-E-S. What else do you say when Liberal MP Irwin Cotler's own wife writes a public letter to the National Post, stating that she's abandoned the party of her husband?

I read the letter in the National Post today, and said to myself, "Ariela Cotler? Nah, there's no way there could be any relation..." and once I'd finished reading the rest of the letters, I tossed the paper in the bin.

Excuse me while I do some dumpster diving... that one's going in the scrapbook for sure!

New OPP Chief Fantino - Props to Dalton

Dalton McGunity has made a stunning choice for the new OPP Chief... former Toronto top cop Julian Fantino.

I say stunning, because I'm shocked that Mr. McGunity would select such a "Law and Order" kind of guy... it's the sort of appointment that you'd expect a Tory to make, not a Liberal. Perhaps a pre-election move?

Regardless, I give Dalton props for the move. After the ineffectiveness of the previous OPP chief, I know I'll sleep better having someone who will actually enforce the law running the show in this province.

Oh, will you look at that... the editorial board of the Toronto Star thinks he's a poor choice. I'm liking this appointment even more now!!!

Iggy and Israel

Warren has posted an open letter from the "Canada-Israel Committee" to Mr. Michael Ignatieff, requesting that he clarify his statement this past weekend, which in essence was accusing Israel of war crimes in Qana.

In short... (cue Ricky) "Iggy... you got some spalain to do!"

As if the Liberal Party of Canada hasn't done enough to alienate the Jewish voters of Toronto and Montreal... this is certainly isn't going to help matters a whole lot! This time though, if you think about it, it's an even bigger afront to the Jewish community. Before, it was mostly the left of the Party that had raised the ire of that community.

Iggy, according to most Liberals, represents the "right wing" (ha, that's a laugh!) of the Liberal Party. Thus, if both sides are now taking shots at Israel, that leaves little or no room within the Party for the Jewish vote.

No problem... there's plenty of room for just about everyone in the big tent of the Conservative Party of Canada...

How low would you go?

Well, time to weigh in on last nights major political event... Bob Rae skinny-dipping with Rick Mercer.

Well, it's not like it hasn't been done before... that is, a politician stripping down, and still managing to pull off a major electoral victory. Just ask Arnold... in both Terminator and T2. (I didn't see T3, so can't comment)

I know, most people will say it's just harmless fun. BUT, this isn't just some average Joe goofing off at the cottage... it was deliberately staged, filmed, and then broadcast to the entire nation... and this from the guy who's seeking to be elected to the highest office in our country for crying out loud!

Scary thought is, in this warped nation of ours, likely no one will blink an eye at it. As I said in my rants the other week about Belinda, I expect that a higher standard is set by my elected officials. Of course, Mr. Rae is not presently an elected official... yet.

Having said all that, I will say one more thing... if he's elected leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, you know that there is no way that clip will remain buried during the next campaign. I'm taking bets on how many butt jokes we'll hear...

Here's another little tid-bit to ponder... some of those life-long Liberal grannies, who have voted Liberal all their life, simply won't stand for this sort of moral decay from members of their Party... sorry, they just won't. Many of them are "old-school" like that. Add to that the whole Domi-gate affair, and you've got a large swath of voters who may vote with their canes... and wheelchairs, and walkers.

So, if you support the CPC and have some time to volunteer on the next Election Day, sign up to be a driver... give some of those nice moral, upstanding, respectable, vote-switching elderly women a lift to the polls! ;-)

Those on the left are calling for heads to roll... and for once, I agree with them. Anyone in Washington who had anything to do with covering up a sex-scandal should be forced to resign.

Did you hear that, Senator Hillary Clinton? We're waiting for your letter of resignation.

The Next Liberal Leader

I've said that Dion or Rae's gonna be the one to win this thing. But Paul Wells makes some really good arguments that due to this weekend's results, Iggy's going to be the last man standing. Who am I to argue with Paul Wells?

Well, I'm going to take one of his points, and use it to support my previous ideas.
But if any of the Second Three believes Ignatieff must be stopped, they need to get out to make it happen.

Since I can't imagine that happening, I suspect Ignatieff will face Stephen Harper at the next election. Which means the NDP will have room to thrive; the new Liberal leader will stand offside his party's base on the central foreign-policy issue of the moment; and no attack against Stephen Harper for militarism or coziness with the Bush White House will hold water.

This is the bed the Liberals made for themselves on the weekend. Now they get to lie in it.
A couple of things here. First, I REALLY hope he's right in this prediction regarding the next election! In my book, a divided, or re-aligned, Liberal Party would be ideal for Canada. It would provide for a true Left, Centre-Left, and Centre-Right lineup, and allow for more realistic and regular back-and-forth changes of the guard in Ottawa, instead of the stagnant Liberal "one-party-rule with brief interuptions" sort of government we've gotten used to.

Second, of the three second-tier candidates, if any of them drop out, I still think it will be Kennedy... and I see him and his supporters going to Rae sooner than I can see them supporting Dion or Iggy. Depending on where the rest of the third-string contenders go, it's anyone's game.

So, unless something big happens, either Iggy or Rae wins. However, keep your eyes open for the "up the middle" play I've been predicting... as I've said before, if a major "Stop Iggy" campaign starts, Rae benefits... if then a "Stop Rae" campaign is fostered, the only one, I think, that will be able to pull it off then is Dion, the only potential dark-horse in this race. He's the only Quebecois, he didn't get tarnished in the JC/PM wars, and he's the only middle-of-the-road second tier candidate, as opposed to frontrunner Iggy on the right, and Rae and Kennedy both on the left. Warren seems to think that Dion's got a shot at this too.
Can Dion really win? Yes, he can. He’s got a great organization, he isn’t a polarizing figure, and everyone respects him. He can win. But Ignatieff is obviously the guy to beat, right now.
So, having said all that, here's my three predictions on the final standings...

Outcome #1 (Kennedy stays in)
Iggy
Rae
Dion
Kennedy
(Dion will pick up more 3rd tier candidate supporters than Gerard)

Outcome #2 (Kennedy supports Rae)
Rae (w/Kennedy)
Iggy
Dion

Outcome #3 ("Stop Iggy" and "Stop Rae" movements)
Dion
Iggy and Rae (who knows what order they'll come in)

And yes, these three options are ranked in order of my preference.

We need Icebreakers you say?

Humm... an interesting report from the CBC today.

Did you say we need new icebreakers? I wonder who suggested that during the last Federal Election? And who was it that made it sound like a bad idea? And again, just this past July?

True, we had to back off that idea initially, as money looked tight. Now that we know our fiscal house is in order, we can get started on that... look to see that in the next platform.

Well, Mr. Sweetman has made a change to the domains that he registered, "www.stephenledrew.ca" and "www.stephenledrew.com". Perhaps wanting to avoid any negative press for his internet marketing company, he has changed things so they no longer redirect visitors to "www.millerformayor.ca", Stephen LeDrew's main rival.

He's still hanging on to the domains, but he's taken at least one step in the right direction.
