If I hear that word one more time...

... I'm going to scream! And what word is that, you ask?

BOONDOGGLE

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Who on earth uses a word like that anymore?!?!? I've been hearing that over and over again for years, and you know what? IT DOESN'T WORK! It's the kind of word that only our base understands... but to the rest of the country, it just makes us sound like a cranky bunch of old foggies!!!

My advice to Party HQ... DON'T USE THAT WORD EVER AGAIN IN SPEECHES, FUNDRAISING LETTERS, ANYTHING!!!
Quote from a letter from Doug Finley re: Dion commercials:

"Canadians will soon learn that Mr. Dion is a weak leader who would take our country back. Back to boondoggles. Back to scandal. Back to broken promises."
AHHHHHHHHHH!!!

While I can appreciate your frustration to a certain extent, there is a method to the so-called madness you seem to be experiencing over this word...

The origin of the word Boondoggle and its meaning comes from the Depression. Relief camps were created that paid men 20 cents a day to do nothing kind of tasks like sweeping roads on government money and not much either. These were instituted in the US and here in Canada. Boondoggle means serving no function or having no constructive outcome.

The irony is that it came about under the guided leadership of Conservative Prime Minister R.B. Bennett.

Yea, but who, other than you and a few Tories, know what that word is all about anymore?

Repeating the word over and over again is only useful if the audience in question knows what it means... and today's public doesn't.

Yeah , I feel soooo bad that the Libs are in the shape they are in. Having a leader that isn't a leader , that can't speak English . It is just soo hard to see them soooo broke, it's truly heart breaking. I sure hope that those pretty green ribbons make them feel better about themselves because we wouuld not want to see them suffer from a inferiority complex and lower their self esteem.

This could effect their self confidents and subject them to aquire a government funded support group to help soften the hardships of reality.Although Stephan would be wonderful to help assist a Romper room class excite themselves by waving his hands around. This may prove to be an essential stepping stone to help and regain any loss of self esteem.

The problem is, what word would you replace it with? The Conservatives have tried words like wasteful, meaningless, corruption, all to no avail. The word boondoggle really caught on when the Conservatives coined the phrase "billion dollar boondoggle". The phrase had some staying power with the media, in fact, I think that was when the word boondoggle was resurrected.
