Liblogers agree... Dion is Not a Leader

Well, at least one of them does...
"Dion told us he wanted to lead the Liberal Party. It's time he showed some sign of that. Harper and Layton have taken advantage of every opportunity to get before the cameras. Crass as that may be, in politics, out of sight is very much out of mind.

People here in the West are not responsive to Stephane Dion. His message isn't getting out. Harper ought to be an easy target but Dion isn't firing any shots. That's not leadership."

I think that when a blogger takes a critical look at his own party, he should be commended for honesty.

Diamnation said the same thing about Harper today. It doesn't really prove anything.

The post you link to here is just some guy quibbling with tactics, and then parroting the tired CPC talking point (as you do ad nauseuem).

If you want to quibble about tactics, or make policy criticisms, then by all means do: you will be adding to the debate. Your constant parroting of the CPC "not a leader" talking point adds nothing though; it's just as meaningless as "Harper is scary" or "Mr. Dithers".

The repetition of these meaningless slogans really lowers the debate. You can do better.

Prime Minister Harper has given up. Only a Conservative majority government by next Spring will keep the combat mission going. The PM is not the leader he should be.”

goes both ways, it would seem....

Interesting - what you call a leader is now referred to as Deceivin Stephen and the names blossoming all over the place.

You call yourself a Christian and yet use every opportunity to be negative - this is not what Christ would do.

    shame on you!

Just curious, what kind of a "leader" advocates "cutting and running" once the polls go south? As a matter of fact, which party, cough, is now following the "lead" of the other party when it comes to Afghanistan policy?

Steve V.: Harper brought the vote to Parliament for the first time.He likely realizes the mission in it's present form doesn't have the political will to pass another vote. Be sure, the Conservatives will champion a change of mission and hope enough of the opposition back it's engagement.

Steve V: He has never once advocated "cutting and running"... what he said, if you read any of the coverage of the announcement the other week, is that there is no way that the Opposition (read Dion et. al.) will support an extension of this vital mission... that sounds nothing like advocating that we not extend the mission.

Advocating a position is one thing; simply facing the facts is another thing altogether.

Mr. Harper has recognized, and has informed the nation, that Dion is unwilling to be a leader and let our troops stay until the job is done... regardless of the implications for the millions of Afghans who have just come out from under the boot of a repressive extremist regime.

It's a shame really... I thought that Canada was a nation that looked out for the best interests of our fellow man, regardless of what nation they reside in. No longer... now it seems that we're only interested in looking out for ourselves.

I also find it interesting that the Liberals have now only recently shown any interest in our military, now that we're losing men in combat. Ask any of our men and women in uniform, and they'll tell you that the Liberals didn't show much interest in them over the "decade of darkness" in the 90's, when Liberal cuts almost destroyed our armed forces.

Rob, thanks for the feedback. Having discussed things before, I appreciate when you have something to contribute... and so I respond:

"parroting the tired CPC talking point (as you do ad nauseuem)"

"The repetition of these meaningless slogans really lowers the debate. You can do better."

I agree that mindless repetition of slogans does lower the debate... and thanks for the vote of confidence that I can "do better".

For the record, repetition of "talking points" is something I honestly try to avoid, because I don't want to be accused of being a parrot... as you've now accused me of being. However, if you go back over most of my posts, I don't think I really do parrot the talking points all that often.

However, having said that, I'll admit that I do "parrot" the "Not a Leader" line on a regular... why? Because I really believe it... to be honest with you, I'm absolutely terrified at the prospect of Mr. Dion becoming the Prime Minister of Canada. I genuinely believe that Dion winning the next election would possibly be the worst thing ever to happen in Canada.

Why, you ask? Here's why... if he's the man of his word that I genuinely believe that he is, then he'll follow through on his promises to stick to Kyoto... and our economy will be completely scuttled. The new economic engine of the nation, the West, will come to a grinding halt just like it did in the 70's, and tens of thousands of people all across this nation will be tossed out of work. For that reason alone, I desperately don't want to see Dion become the Prime Minister.

Then of course, there's the possibility that Dion is lying, and won't stick to Kyoto, and is just using it as a wedge issue to get elected... after which, it will just become another "scrap the GST" promise... but I don't believe that senario.

Of course, that being said, there's another prospect that troubles me... perhaps Dion honestly wants to stick to Kyoto, but the brain trust has no intention of letting him do it once he wins power... which then makes him nothing more than a puppet PM.

I think that just about covers all the senarios... none of which appeal to me.

Your last two responses really show how vacuous the "not a leader" refrain is.

You say: Mr. Harper has recognized, and has informed the nation, that Dion is unwilling to be a leader and let our troops stay until the job is done

It isn't up to Parliament to decide whether the troops stay in Afghanistan. It is up to the government. If the troops come home in 2009, it isn't because Dion isn't a leader; it's because Harper decided to bring them home.

You said that worries you about Dion is that "he'll follow through on his promises to stick to Kyoto".

If he does that, that doesn't make him "not a leader". It makes him a leader who is taking bold action that you don't happen to agree with.

I hope now that you see how intellectually lazy the "not a leader" refrain is.
