Faith Based Schools - Tory's Undoing

I figured this one would be suicidal, albeit for different reasons. (Actually, my exact quote in June was "However, based on the details mentioned by the CBC, here's my take on the idea... IT MIGHT JUST COST HIM THE ELECTION.")

And here we see the results, via an Ipsos poll just released by Canwest Global... "Ontario Liberals on course for majority: poll"

If the Tory war room has any aces up their sleeves, now would be the time to show them.

With the exception of faith-based school funding, all the other PC policies are better than the Liberal policies.

John Tory is even slightly preferred personally in the polls to McGuinty, whom voters don't trust.

It's only John Tory's policy on faith-based school funding that will ensure an undeserved Liberal win.

It's regrettable that Mr. Tory created this wedge issue without clearly understanding the long term consequences for Ontario, or even the short term voter reaction.

Unless John Tory at the very least promises to allow a free vote for his party MPPs on this issue, I think the chances of a PC government are lost.

Better yet, he should commit to a thorough and independent study of options before taking a recommendation to the legislature for a free vote, including systems used by other provinces, including Alberta.

Canadian Thanksgiving is on Monday Oct. 8 and election day in Ontario is Oct. 10.

Given that long weekend, Ontario voters may be paying less attention after Friday Oct. 5 to major policy announcements or adjustments.

In other words, I think that Mr. Tory only has about 7 days starting tomorrow to turn his party's dismal fate around.

Presumably, Mr. Tory and his advisors are aware of the clock.

    No sirree Bob.

    Mr.Tory has INTEGRITY.

    He won't change his mind.

And foolish me, teaching my kids that sometimes admitting you are wrong actually takes more courage than refusing to see that you were.

This (FB Funding) is the most immoral policy the party could support, not because its the right thing or the wrong thing to do - but because it guarantees the liberals another 4 years in which to hack away at all that is good about Ontario. It was the job of the PC party to get these cheats & liars out - not to make noble gestures.

    Take heart.

I happen to know that a major federal announcement will occur, and that this will provide a major lift to the ontario tories.

I'm really surprised that given almost four years to prepare for a fixed date election, a totally unexpected and divisive policy is brought forth to the surprise of everyone at the last minute, seemingly without any long-term analysis of its implications to Ontario, or an appreciation of public reaction.

Announcing long term controversial policies during a short election campaign, without previous debate and socialization is completely foolhardy.

Perhaps this will be a valuable lesson for the PC Party of Ontario, to better engage both the people of Ontario and the party's grass roots supporters in its policy formulation.

    What a disappointment.

It's "panic city" time in a lot of supposedly "safe" Tory ridings in rural Ontario. Big conference call Sunday night, and if Tory does not step back, thers will be others "pulling a Murdoch". The camoaign office calls are vehemently opposed, even after axplanation.Lasch's credibility completely gone, Tory himself, trailing by 10 points against "Wynnie the Poof"Not a lot of happy campers in our ramks!

Suicidal is right. Tory attached a stone to his neck and dove off the side of the boat with that one.

I'm not sure why everyone wants to declare defeat when we're down by just a touchdown in the 3rd quarter.

Neither is Greg Lyle. Check out his commentary in today's Globe:

What I find insulting in the McFibber commercials is that he Infers the the Catholics are the "Real" Christians and all the others are invalid .
This is how Iraq ended up with Muslims bombing each others Mosque as the "false" followers of islam and Muhammed , now we have McGuinty stealing part of my paycheck to fund his perception of Jesus and the "True" Christians .
He's safe in canada because non-Catholics will merely vote for another Party and not become suicide bombers driving trucks into the Queen's Park Parliament buildings.
I can't beieve that 300 years from now when Muslims become the majority in canada that McGuinty thinks Imams will respect the Charter to fund Catholic Schools and Madrassas , no Muslim based nation that i know of even give equal status to non-Muslims let alone Christians as a minority faith.

"As the fallout from last week’s leaders debate settles in the minds of Ontarians, and amid growing opposition to the faith-based school funding issue, a new Ipsos Reid poll conducted exclusively on behalf of CanWest News Service reveals that the lead that the Liberals have enjoyed over their chief rival Progressive Conservatives has risen now to a ten-point gap."
