John Godfrey's taking off too

This just in... a surprise announcement from Don Valley West Liberal MP John Godfrey, who has announced that he will resign from the House of Commons on July 1, 2008, if a Federal Election has not been called by then.

Folks, we're up to 18 Liberal MP's who aren't running again... that's closing in on 20% of their current caucus.

Though I must admit, I do admire them for putting on such a brave face...

Actually this is probably very good for the Liberals. The problem has always been that the Liberals weren't trashed in the last election so they had a lot of hangers-on from the previous government.

The Tories were obliterated in 1993 and now the current crop of Conservatives are nothing like the previous group. So the Mulroney scandal can't hurt them, nor can issues like the GST.

With the Liberals on the other hand, its more or less the exact same group that was in power, leaving them vulnerable to the flaws of the previous government (Martin/Chretien). So this could be a blessing in disguise for Dion really.

On the other hand, incumbency matters a lot...

Not in places like Don Valley West it doesn't. ;-)

I would have said the same thing about Herb Grey's seat in Windsor-West. A Liberal bastion, fortress, Liberal since time began, etc..

Ended up going NDP in a bi-election and has stayed NDP ever since.

Incumbency matters a lot. Everywhere. Especially with a leader as unpopular as Dion. People will vote for the local candidate because he's familiar and more trustworthy (in the constituents' minds).

I'm not saying that it'll be a potential pick-up. But if say the NDP run a good candidate with strong local roots they could take it. Or conversely if the Tories ran one it might happen too.

    *yawn*

If it were all the same people running, you'd be screeching about how the Liberals were the same old same old.
