One Liberal MPP I agree with

Just saw this on Global News... backbench Liberal MPP David Orazietti is planning on introducing a Private Members bill to ban smoking in cars in Ontario.

Dude, you got my vote. I agree with you... we should be harshly charging individuals who feel that it is their right to smoke and sentence their children to an early death.

Another slippery slope issue that seems to have many supporters like you.
Using the same logic the government could however also ban parents from:
Serving certain foods to their children (too much fat).
Allowing them to participate in sports or other activities they deem dangerous.
    Spanking.
Allowing them to visit certain websites they deem inappropriate.
Allowing them to view or read material that is not approved (not politically correct).
Perhaps you support all of the above it is after all for the children.
The question then becomes which is worse a parent in jail and not working or one that may expose their kids to the occasional risk?

Or perhaps forbidding a parent to take their child to the church of their choice, or any church at all. And don't think is beyond the realm of possibility.

These types of things always make my nervous because it appears to be for a good cause, but having the government take my car away because it will save the earth is also a good cause too but I doubt many would support it.

Nanny state legislation of common sense, a lefties dream utopia.

All true... however, this is one that just makes common sense to me.

I grew up in a blue haze, but I consider myself lucky 'cause most of the other kids on my street had alcoholics for parents and mine didn't drink.

I remember many occasions when children sought refuge at our (admittedly smokey) house when there were 'troubles' in their own homes.

Yes, smoking is a filthy and disgusting habit; but if we're talking about unfit parents I'd suggest we start with the drunks and the druggies first.

That ain't gonna happen, though, the latest full-colour 62 page catalogue of all things alcoholic from the LCBO has just been delivered to my home, just in time for Christmas! That little offering of 'peace and joy' coordinates well with the government-owned neighbourhood liquor store's 'Sparkling Nights' on-street banners.

Ah yes, smoking. The focus of evil in the modern world.

CC...I cannot agree with you on this one. Laws don't change people's hearts. I believe it is irresponsible for parents to smoke in the car with kids but I cringe to think of one more law that can be used against parents...it is a very slippery slope toward a nanny/police state.
Our police have bigger issues to deal with.

I agree with you on this one.

And it's not about it being "one more law to be used against parents". It's about one more law to protect kids.

If a police sees a kid being abused on the street by their parents should he do something about it?

The cops aren't going to be patrolling looking for this, but if they do see it occurring they should be able to heavily fine them.

Me dere robert - You explain it so well as to why it is NOT a slippery slope.

I don't think there is too much debate whether smoking in a car with your child is harming your child. Most of you seem to all agree it's wrong.

Other issues mentioned such as spanking, what to feed your kids, what sports your kids play, etc. are obviously more subjective. It isn't a clear cut: this is hurting the child.

Saying this law is bad because it might lead to more laws that won't make sense is not that strong an argument.

When someone proposes those laws that don't make sense then you should oppose those ones.

I think this one makes sense.
