South America on the brink of war?

Leftist dictator Hugo Chavez has ordered tanks to the border of neighbouring Columbia, after Columbia killed rebel FARC leader Raul Reyes, who was taking refuge just over the border in Equador.

Venezuela's Chavez has been a vocal supporter of FARC, who has been leading a guerrilla campaign against the government of Columbia for many years.  Chavez seems to now be using this incident as a pretext to further his leftist agenda for the southern continent.

Anyone care to try and defend this madman?  Didn't think so.

When I was in Venezuela in 1995 phone directories there showed a territorial claim against Guyana (about half the country) but nothing in the border areas you write about.

In the context of South American politics starting something where there is no claim of territory is less compelling than one where there is a long-standing claim of same.

Chavez must be feeling very secure to be able to use this.

Either that Bruce, or he has no intention of actually invading. He could be attempting to provoke a US military response (ie floating their carriers down there) as a pretense to 'rally round the flag' and re-introduce that reform referendum he lost. Or worse still, use the US 'military aggression' to simply forget about the referendum entirely and declare a military dictatorship in light of this crisis.
