The Electric Car: right around the corner?

h/t to Red Tory for this... it looks like a realistic electric car could be right around the corner.

Like I said over on Red Tory's site... I WANT ONE! (actually, I want their small hatchback model, whenever they get around to making one of those)

UPDATE: Some further thoughts, prompted by conversations with the folks over at Red Tory: "My hope is that GM will snap them up quick... they're the most reliable auto maker of the Former Big Three, and it might just be what they need to propell them for the next 100 years.

The McGuinty and Harper governments could also start making some shrewed overtures to Tesla and GM, offering development capital and tax incentives to build the cars here in Ontario... that's a joint venture that I'd put my full support behind!"

Where is all the electricity going to come from if everyone drives an electric car? California and Toronto have brown outs now.
The world is short on all power supplies not just oil.( except coal and shale coal which could drive the world for another thousand yrs, but coal is the bad guy in a planet currently low on
CO2 and Oxygen while in a cooling, not heating period.)
Should we build nuclear reactors all over the country or just dam all rivers and creeks?
Electricity is not the answer just another power supply the world is short of now.
Man made global warming theories are for idiots with political agendas that surprisingly are not for mankind's benifit but socialist ideoligists and UN new world order idiots benifit.

It's a bit of a specious argument, but brown outs shouldn't be a problem as those generally occur during peak periods of usage, whereas cars would be charged for the most part during off-peak hours. But you're correct that there's no solution that doesn't involve the consumption of energy in one form or another. Short of walking everywhere of course, which isn't practicable for the vast majority of people.

For me, it's not primarily about CO2 reductions, it's about reducing my dependance on oil... with gas at $1.28 today, and with the few around town KMs I do, I'd love to have something like this.

If it further reduces my carbon footprint, that's just an added bonus... though I already have one of the lowest carbon footprints of anyone I know, on pretty much on all sides of the political spectrum.

Ya, I can't wait for these to come around!

The Chevrolet Volt is supposed to be out by 2011 and I'm seriously considering buying one.

They are currently testing out electric versions of the Smart Car Twofour in London, UK. If those come to the market before the Volt I'd pick that up.

Those electric vehicles would drop the price of my dailing commute from about $10 a day, to around $1.

I'm so confused! I thought all corporate entities were greedy and anti-environment, isn't that what we have been taught? This appears to be a financially driven (not government mandated) solution to 'dwindling' oil supplies. Who would have ever guessed that the marketplace would listen to consumers and offer them what they want, without being told by the government to screw themselves over? (see regulations on fuel economy)

MONEY AND GLORY! That's what he said, well, pretty much, that's why Tesla is around today. Now, can Jack Layton be for such a company if it goes against everything he believes in? (corporate greed = bad) hmmmm....

Honking big nuke plants will supply all the electrons you need. Just get over your fear of radioactivity.

It's way safer than petroleum-based pollutants, if handled correctly.
