Free upgrade from Vista to Windows7?

As an IT professional who took the plunge and got Vista relatively early, let me say this right now... there BETTER be a FREE, or at least a REALLY CHEAP, upgrade path offered by Microsoft to Vista sufferers.

Cause if not, I'm thinking there's gonna be a bit of an outcry... maybe even an upswing in Mac and Linux installs. (I know I'd be more inclined to give Linux a whirl on my laptop...)

i recently pulled vista home premium off my dual-core laptop and installed xp pro.

some folks would call that downgrading... but no regrets here.

might give ubuntu a whirl too.

    Christian,

As an IT professional who advised clients to avoid Vista like the plague, I'm surprised that you would have committed your main machine to it.

I had an option for a 'free' upgrade from XP to Vista through HP, and given what I knew about it then (which has further been re-enforced) I thought it was too steep of a price. They stripped out the only thing that might have interested me (WinFS) and nannied it to the point of un-usability.

Hey Sylvia, yea I know, I told most folks the same, but I had two reasons to just go for it... 1) a sweet deal on a laptop (seriously, even with Vista it was too good to pass up) and 2) the fact that people were going to start asking me questions about it... which turned out to be correct.

My laptop does run well for the most part on Vista, don't get me wrong, but I'm seriously hoping they're planning on making amends to us in the IT world for their biggest mistake ever.

If you want to try Linux on your notebook, try this:

    http://wubi-installer.org/

    Works great.

I have dual boot Vista and Linux. Vista sucks.

MS will charge the same as they have always charged, and most people will pay it.

You should totally get a Mac! Especially that they redesigned their whole computer line! And the best part is you can install Windows on the Mac so it's like having 2 computers in 1. All the cool interactive features on Windows 7 are duplicates of Mac features. I've had a Mac for 2 years and once you go Mac, you don't go back! It would be like switching from Liberal to Conservative, why would you go back!!!!!
