Yes, it's a vast right-wing conspiracy...

And now for the rest of the story... you listening James Bowie?

Turns out that a (for now) unnamed student union has once again used their authoritarian and supreme left-wing cabal to defund and delist their university's Conservative campus club. The reason? Their paperwork wasn't filed in time to get club status on campus.

Why wasn't it filed with the student union on time? Because the student union didn't advise them of the deadline until 24 hours before the paperwork was due. But you see, they can do that whenever they so desire, with any group they so desire, because they're the equivalent of a student-run junta, and have supreme authority over these matters... and more importantly, over the coffers of student fees, which they then get to use to support their own pet clubs and causes.

And some morons wonder why right-leaning student groups might want to organize and take over their local left-wing student unions. (but what's really sad is that we actually have to walk them through the reasoning step by step by step...)

What that student union did was wrong.

But the concern raised by James is that, instead of conservative students getting upset and organizing at a grassroots level, what you have here is a federal political party trying to organize the students to do its party work.

The student union business is horrible. They are so disconnected from the body of students, their concerns and priorities. They are far too politicized on far too many narrow issues to be of any good for students generally. In my view.

But it is a very different thing to see that and think something should be done, and having a national political machine focused on turning that bad situation into a part of its partisan machinery.

That is turning a democratic reform and good representation issue into, not a left-right issue, but a leftwing student vs Conservative Party issue. That's what is wrong about this.

What is even MORE wrong, is what ELSE that article reveals. Braid actually admits that events like Rally for Canada which we were told were independent, grassroots uprisings, were in fact organized by the party and specifically organized in a way to LOOK like they are grassroots organizations. And they did this by creating these false front groups that Braid is telling the students to organize.

That is the more despicable part of this from my point of view.

It might be easier to start with which student's unions did not do this. Conservative, Flanagan, and Knopff are major taboos and anyone who dares utter these words is ostracized and delegitimatized in any academic debate.

With CFS confidently running the show free speech and expression is merely a vestige of a bygone age.

That student union strategy certainly sounds problematic. Don't they know that the proper way to handle a deadline is to announce it after it's passed? Just another lesson in fair politics we can learn from the Conservatives...

    In response to Teds comments:

I recognize that university politics are not the place for federal political parties. However, when the campuses become a hotbed for anti-conservative rhetoric and the marginalization of individuals who present a right wing perspective, something needs to be done. A future generation of potential Conservative supporters are being prejudiced by the relentless attacks. As such, the Conservatives must retain a presence on campus to offset the influence of the leftists. I know from first-hand experience that the NDP's youth subsidiaries are already highly involved with the student unions, clubs and CFS.

In response to events such as Rally for Canada, there was strong partisan influence and connections on both sides. This is largely the result of many of the most passionate individuals also being members of their respective parties. Should members of conservatives, liberals or NDP be precluded from organizing independent political protests solely on the basis of their prior political activity. That hardly sounds like pluralist democracy to me...
