Senate Reform continues, despite Liberals attempts to thwart democracy

The man who hears everything, Stephen Taylor, is reporting rumours of Senate appointments to occur tomorrow, Thursday August 27th. Checked the Senate website, and there are presently NINE vacant seats.

So, despite all the Liberals attempt to thwart Senate reform, progress is being made. Here's hoping that balance can soon be achieved, and that we'll actually be able to discuss reforming the "Red Chamber", changing it from a retirement home for the Liberal elite, and make it more balanced and relevant to average Canadians.

Yeah, balance is being achieved by appointing the Prime Minister's top staffers to the Senate. This is different from Mulroney how? And since when does appointing your friends constitute reform. It's the exact opposite of everything REFORM ever stood for.

Thwart democracy? What have they done that is not expressly and deliberately created in the Constitution?

But what am I talking about. What is democracy to a party that thinks nothing about bribing MPs for their vote, breaking campaign finance laws, breaking their own fixed election dates, cancelling confidence votes to save their own jobs and then cancelling Parliament altogether to keep their grip on power.

Oh, yes, we should ALL be taking lessons from Harper about "democracy"!

It's simple Anon, by appointing folks who are willing to reform the Senate, we'll actually be able to discuss and maybe get something DONE on that front. Leaving the seats wide open, and getting nothing done, until another Liberal government is elected and then packs in more Liberals, will only ensure that reform NEVER happens.

It's sad that so many people need to have this spelled out for them in plain English...

    Gee Old School,
    I'd agree with you EXCEPT,
since postponing a confidence vote and Parliament,
the Opposition parties have had numerous opportunity to bring down the government, and did not.
A budget, ways and mean, a 'report card' and have an opportunity again in September.

So I would say that PMSH actually saved the Liberal party from acting on what your leader now considers illegitimate and divisive,
    the coalition.

Chuck Cadman said he was not bribed, as did his wife...Conservatives did what the Liberals did for many decades regarding campaign financing, It didn't seem to be a problem then..fixed election dates are for majority govts, not minority..your bolded text is incorrect, yet it is one and the same..Harper prorogued parliament so the elected govt of Canada, ( you know, the ones that came 11 seats or so shy of a majority..) could maintain governance, and not an unelected cabal of Marxists led by a Liberal leader who had just went down to an historic defeat in the previous GE.

You should heed your own advice in learning lessons..certainly not from a group that would have given veto powers over legislation to a separatist party..

An actual elected Senate with term limits would require a constitutional amendment that about half the provinces will never agree to. In the meantime, there is no reason for not holding elections and appointing the winners, or at least appointing people who have done something for the country to justify putting them there.

    Actually Gary:

    - Harper admits they offered Cadman "financial considerations" for his support. If it talks like a duck...

    - No other party did the in-and-out scam the Conservatives did. Parts of it, sure. But the illegal aspect of it was that they put together a scheme designed to circumvent the spending caps. And they got caught.

    - I've read that fixed election date law. It doesn't say anything about minority or majority government, surprise surprise. What is more, Harper himself said the point of the law was that so a PM couldn't call an election for partisan advantage and expressly said the only time there should be an election is when on the fixed date or when the government loses the confidence of Parliament. Once again not only breaking a promise but showing contempt for Parliament and democracy.

    - "Harper prorogued parliament so the elected govt of Canada could maintain governance". Exactly what I said: he cancelled confidence motions and cancelled Parliament to keep his job and his grip on power. At least we agree on something. But I'm curious. Which one of the "cabal of marxists" was unelected? Seems to me they were just as elected representatives as Harper himself.

Is there anything left of the conservative Stephen Harper? Is there any conservative principle or major platform left that Stephen Harper hasn't flip flopped himself on?

You must be joking. "Reform" this is nothing more than simple cronny patronage at its worst.

Where were the elections? Would have been so hard for Harper or Fletcher to hold some sort of election or vote or referendum in those constituencies before the appointment?

And why only CPC supporters? That should be your biggest clue.

I think you are deluding yourself by thinking that by making more patronage appointments we can acheive refrom.

Here's how we acheive reform: We don't do the same thing as last time!

And then Chris, the Liberals just sit back and laugh at us and our "principles" when they get back into power, becuase we've left the seats vacant, and they immediately go ahead and pack it with their own cronies.

There's this little thing called "reality" that's getting in the way of your recommendation.

Sorry Anon, but I'm not posting your Liberal talking points, disguised as a comment, here on this blog... you're welcome to make a point or valid argument, but to simply repost the same talking points that I've seen on oh, say a dozen or so blogs, doesn't strike me as, you know, DIALOGUE.
