CTV: Liberals got $56,500 donation in 2001 from vaccine supplier

Well, looks like the Liberals really botched this one... while they've been desperately trying to gain traction in the polls by attempting to pin the problems related to sole-sourcing our supply of the H1N1 vaccine, the Liberals have managed to expose themselves to accusations of corruption ONCE AGAIN.

CTV has uncovered the fact that the Liberal Party of Canada received a $56,500 donation from the very same company to which THEY sole-sourced the contact in 2001!
Canada's H1N1 vaccine is made exclusively by GlaxoSmithKline, which signed a 10-year contract in 2001 with the then-Liberal government to develop and produce enough vaccine for the entire population in the event of a pandemic.

The contract was awarded to Shire BioChem, a company that gave $57,000 to the Liberal Party in 2001. The company has since been bought out by GSK, but the contract remained valid since it secured the Ste. Foy vaccine production facility.
And just to be sure, here it is from the Liberal Party's 2001 Financial Return, via the Elections Canada database:

5273 Shire BioChem Inc. $56,536.25

(just in case, I took a look at the other guys... Shire BioChem did NOT make any contributions to the Alliance or the PC's that year)

That's right folks... FIFTY SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS from the drug company to whom THEY sole-sourced our vaccines! AND THEY'RE TRYING TO PIN THE H1N1 ISSUES ON THE TORIES!?!?!?!?!?

So I guess there's a new series of questions that needs to be asked... why did the Liberals select Shire BioChem Inc. for the contract? Were there any prior discussions of possible "donations" if the Liberals selected Shire BioChem? Was it JUST $56,500, or were there other little brown paper bags we should know about?

h/t to "Orange Tory" for this story

    Prickgate?....

$56,000? Sheesh, that wouldn't have payed to fix the Liberal campaign plane when it was grounded in Montreal.

What does this have to do with the Conservatives ordering the H1N1 vaccine late?

And the government can still order vaccines from anyone.

This happened right after ADSCAM and the money diverted to Quebec candidates. I wonder what Donolo, Kinsella and others implicated in ADSCAM where doing then? There may be much more to this.

$56,000? Really? You guys are complaining about such a piddly amount?

Talk to me when the amounts get into the millions and it becomes "real money".

Besides, brown paper bags don't come cheap you know.

Here, have a golf ball with my name on it, that will make you feel all better.

Every "scandal" the Liberals have attempted to stir up has either failed miserably, or blown up right in their faces. Sexy cancer? Forgotten. Body bags? They were requested, and one Chief blasted the Liberals for using real people to try and score political points. Communion wafers? The priest that was giving them out said the PM consummed it. Stimulus funding? The Tories have provided the paperwork; they ended up standing in the wrong field. Lack enough H1N1 vaccine? The Liberals themselves were the ones that signed the contract with the company that even ended up donating to their party.

I guess when you're party is totally bereft of policies and ideas, scandal mongering is all you have left. But when you can't even do THAT right, and in fact make things worse for yourself as a result, how can you EVER convince Canadians that you should lead their nation?

Welcome to the present Mr. Donolo. :D

    Well Mark Francis, its obvious that you don't understand so good so I will type real s l o w j u s t f o r y o u.

Point one: The purpose of a sole source contract is that there becomes a S O L E source. In other words, contractually the Government of Canada is obliged to purchase all such vaccines from the S O L E source.

Point two: The Government did not order the vaccine late because there was no vaccine to order. The soup that the manufacturer wanted to sell as vaccine had not been approved for human consumption. Once the soup was declared to be a vaccine ie safe for human consumption the Government placed the order.

Point three: Without the Liberals, Media and WHO whipping up as much panic as they did there would have been no need for the vaccine because as 'flu' goes H1N1 is very mild. In fact far more people will die from traffic accidents than H1N1 but I don't see you calling for the Government to give everyone a free if untested helmet and body armour.
