Humour: Your political stunt of the day

So some crazy kids I know crashed Iffy's speech at the U of T today. I'm told that this one kid, a dual US/Canadian citizen, shakes Iggy's hand as he's walking up to the stage, looks him right in the eye and says to him, "I'm so proud to meet a fellow American."

Iggy snarled back, "I'm a Canadian!"... and then proceeded to shake the hand of the girl next to the guy, who was holding a poster that said "I'm American, Russian, Canadian? - Iggy" (see pic below)

(you gotta love that "Couldn't Beat Dion = FAIL!" sign!)

That is elitism, when you don't even think it worthy of you to come down from on high and take questions from your subjects.

I feel if so many Blogging Tories are going to regurgitate nonsensical and hypocritical PMO talking points, I owe to myself and Canadians to point that nonsense and hypocrisy out.

I just love how it is elistist for Ignatieff to speak in a public forum, take questions from anyone who wants to come, spend an hour or so answering those questions... but Harper is not elitist because, although as leader of the CPC (can't speak to before that) he's never mingled with us lowly common folk and only uses ordinary Canadians for props and only ever sets foot in a Tim Hortons for photo ops.

The double standard is really interesting, as predictable as it may be.

When has Iffy ever won a leadership race?

What I am hearing from every commenter here is that no, Stephen Harper has not come down from on high to meet with and take unscripted questions from ordinary Canadians in a forum open to the public. Ever.

Just what I thought. Now is it that he doesn't think we are worthy of his attention or is it because he is too afraid of being asked a question he didn't pre-write?

In the open public forums Ignatieff is holding, as has been pointed out by Iceman and in the papers, anyone can attend and anyone can ask question. And he's being asked questions of all kinds from some who clearly oppose him.

Would Harper ever do that, even as opposition leader? Not on your life. Us little people have to be told by him what is important and what is democratic. We don't get to decide.

What Parliament to work? Too bad, he'll shut down committees he doesn't like, fire civil servants who don't tow the party line, shut down police investigations, defy court orders and then unilaterally announce an 83 day holiday in order to avoid accountability.

During that 83 day Harper Holiday, how many times has Harper come down from his limestone tower to talk to ordinary Canadians?

Exactly. This is an example of the only kind of ordinary Canadian he thinks is worth his arrogant time.

I am so sorry you will miss about 17 days of QP, as the Olympic break was also voted on. Check out how calendars for sitting days are presented, and when they must be presented. Sept 30, so all these breaks were set by Sept 30. Maybe in the next session PMSH will eliminate the summer break of July Aug and most of Sept. Will Volpe, Goodale, McCallum get on tv and complain that they can't ask question, during that period.

You are making the same mistake that others trying to spin for the CPC are making in assuming that the only thing Parliament does when it isn't shut down is have sitting sessions in QP.

Because of prorogation, there will be no committee work, not reports received, no testimony given (not just on detainees but from experts and stakeholders and consumers on the impact of new or proposed laws), new regulations required by laws cannot be approved, etc etc. Heck, Harper can't even get new money for Haiti with Parliament shut down; he needs to take the funds out of department budgets.

It's like saying an actor only does 2 hours of work a few weeks at a time when he is actually performing.

All of that could have been going on in January and February, even during the Olympics. The rest of us Canadians don't get to shut down all of our work for 83 days for a Harper Holiday.

So, no committee work, laws passed, reports, witnesses called, or any of the rest of your rant.
Like so many of your ilk, YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH.
My truth is the coalition is alive and well, waiting to pounce, but they will fail. That is where Layton is making a huge mistake, he could play it cool and end up with Iggys position, as opposition leader. With the coming election, he might do it, with libs being reduced to non party status.
Oh, and if they force an election, guess what, the HofC will be prorogued again, and it will take months to get back after an election, then go on summer holidays for July and August.
The next election the question will be conservatives or coalition, regardless of how they deny it. Where can Iggy gain 67 seats to form the same minority that the PM has, or for Layton to gain 100 seats. Not in the west, that is for sure. And should Iggy gain enough in Que and Ont, be prepared for equalization payments from AB to stop. Our new finance minister is already asking for new talks re those payments.

Parliament is a lot more than Question Period.

I'll type it again in case you missed it.

Parliament is a lot more than Question Period.

Just because the Conservatives want an 83 day long Harper Holiday, doesn't mean Canadians agree. We would all love to kick back and get first in line tickets to see the Olympics. We should all be so entitled.

But most Canadians will be working during the Harper Holiday. Most Canadians are pissed with Harper for giving himself such a long vacation.

And what really pisses us lowly un-entitled Canadians off is his arrogance and that we all know he did it just to avoid accountability.

You've lost 14 points in the polls because of this. So I don't know why I am showing such patience and trying to educate you on this. I should be letting you all go on and lose another 10 points or so.

But the principles and values that underlie our Parliamentary democracy are too important to let Harper get away with this or to let your nonsense stand un-corrected.

Reduced to posting online while his Party of Twitter is reduced to a university farewell tour and the latest great white hype. The LPOC is a spent force in Canadian Politics.

Since 2000 every General Election the Liberals have bled seats to every other party.

This is 2010 Teddy, no turnaround in Quebec, rural, visible minority, Catholic vote.

In 2008 reduced to the 3 largest cities trying to avoid bankruptcy, Rossi and Iffy were appointed by the boys from Bay Street.

Like Michael Mann resorting to a few online Polls ignoring every other data claiming the dying party is back. ROFL

Bankruptcy, unpaid leadership loans and only 2,000 new contributors.

Teddy you don't own the facts. You can't lie your party back from the cliff, only voters can.

    Official Polls:General Elections.
Since 2000 only one direction, worst POP in over 100 years in 2008, zero in 2009 by-elections.

Best of luck with the Disney spin and using 2-3 Polls to hide the decline of the Liberals.

Time Is Up for your party!

My my, CS, you get more shrill and nonsensical with each knock down of your talking points.

Kudos for getting right back up and into the ring. No need to let facts and reality keep you down.

The last day Parliament was in session was December 11. The next time it will be in session is March 3. 83 days when Harper evades accountability.

Harper prorogued on December 30. 63 days of Parliament being completely shut down.

In fact, between December 11 and and December 30, the opposition parties which form a majority in Parliament and hold the support of a majority of Canadians, tried to convene some committees to conduct some work but the Conservatives refused saying they would meet in January. Were they lying to Canadians or was Harper lying to them? Interesting side question.

Shutting down Parliament also needlessly cost the Canadian taxpayer millions and millions of dollars and wasted thousands and thousands of hours of work, and left over half of Harper's legislative agenda cancelled. He obviously didn't care about his crime legislation as much as he claimed and it was not as "urgent" to get it passed as he claimed. Was he lying to Canadians when he said that?

So Ted, I guess we can count on your rock-solid support if the Government moves to restore all legislation to the same stage as pre-proroguation?

Because you guys seem to be repeating the Liberal talking point that "millions of hours of work has been flushed down the drain". So what will you say if the Opposition doesn't support the Government's move to restore all that legislation?

Will you then in turn attack the Opposition for "flushing millions of hours of work down the drain"?

Just asking for a little consistancy.

The HofC was on Christmas break and even without prorogation would not be called back till Jan 25. Sorry Ted, the PM did not avoid any responsibility as it was voted on by all members. The liberals tried another stunt and it failed.
No witnesses could be called during that time. And many witnesses who had volunteered to testify, were refused by this great committee. Could it be they would tell a different story re Colvin.
Today the liberals lost another faux scandal re in and out. KHS goes on trial today in Germany and has said-I never bribed anyone in Canada. So was he lying during the faux scandal by the libs when in Canada, or is he lying now.
Perhaps you Ted, should learn to research and get the facts. You lie that the PM shut down the HofC for 83 days is a lie. But, that is the liberal way.

Some of those bills cannot be re-introduced and fast-tracked. For example, the crime bill that the Conservatives introduced in the Senate and have not bothered to bring to a vote cannot be fast tracked because the rule doesn't apply to the Senate.

Many of those bills never had unanimous approval in the House and they need unanimous approval to get fast-tracked. So not going to happen.

Even if they get unanimous approval, Harper has delayed bills he said were "urgent" by 6 to 12 months. Or more if he forces an election again.

Harper seems in no rush to get these through, so I don't see why anyone should blame the opposition parties for not playing by his game plan.

Especially when Harper shows such contempt for Parliament.

On December 18, the special committee on Afghanistan called Richard Colvin. The Conservative committee members refused to show up and said they didn't need to because they could meet in January. The House of Commons does not need to be sitting for committees to be called. They meet all summer long, for example. Were they lying or was Harper lying to them?

And let's set the record straight: no witnesses were refused. That is a complete fabrication.

"Perhaps you Ted, should learn to research and get the facts. You lie that the PM shut down the HofC for 83 days is a lie. But, that is the liberal way."

    *Sigh*

MaryT, why do you keep making stuff up? Do English words not have the same meaning in your world? I never said he shut down Parliament for 83 days. I said he gave himself an 83 day holiday. I said he shut Parliament down for 63 days.

The difference is technical and important. From the moment Harper prorogued, he shut down Parliament. While that means a delay 17 days of QP, it actually means 63 days when Parliament - which is a lot more than the House sitting or QP - can't do anything. The committees were indeed going to work in January and February. Look at the committee calendar, as it was. They would have started convenining by January 26 at the latest. They were going to call the Afghanistan committee back this week.

Even if you want to take your view, things that would have been done in January now won't be done until March. No magic calendar can change that fact.

As they say, you are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.
