Carbon Tax II suggested at Liberal 150

Remember that pesky Carbon Tax? You know, the one first suggested by Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff in the 2006 Liberal Leadership race, and then put forward as the cornerstone of Dion's disasterous 2008 election campaign? Well, guess what? IT'S BACK!!! The idea has been raised again at the Liberal 150 conference, going on right now in Montreal.
The chill came in the afternoon, when panelists, egged on by former Toronto Star columnist David Crane, told the gathering that the most sensible way to green the Canadian economy was to impose a carbon tax.

It was exactly that proposal that many blame for the defeat of the Liberals in the last election. It would be a courageous party, in the 'Yes Minister' sense of the word (i.e., politically suicidal), to propose it again.

    Iffy's version of the Green shift had the taxes staying in the Province where collected, like in BC.
    Tho it's not hard to figure out the Feds would take their cut off the top, and like any cash cow, the sky's the limit.

    Campbell was surprisingly successful with his carbon tax, and imo 'because' the feds didn't get their hands on a cent.

    Iffy's 'thinkers' haven't figured that out yet.

    wilson: Yeah, I'm not actually opposed to a federal carbon tax (or food tax) as long as its revenues were used to directly offset income and business taxes, which Dion's wouldn't have done. I say this because, as imperfect as these new-age taxational systems may be, it's better on principal to tax what's bad -- i.e., pollution -- then what's good -- i.e., wealth creation.

    wilson;
    If by successful you mean raising money then yes Campbell may have succeeded. The real point was to reduce GHG's. I doubt it did much there but then if you are bringing in all this cash then why wreck a good thing bt worrying about anything else? Right.

    What's wrong with having a reasonable debate about how to deal with climate change? I'm getting sick of you people making a big deal out of everything everytime the words "carbon tax" is even mentioned.

    You know what? I'm for a carbon tax. Let's actually make pollution a penalty in this country and show the world that we are f'n serious in this major issue we have on our hands.
