Having to watching Israeli news for updates

Cause you know you won't get the straight goods from any North American news outlet... especially the report (which I'm sure is to come) that weapons were in fact found on board.

Oh, did you hear that the IDF offered to deliver all the humanitarian aid on board the ships themselves if the folks on board would surrender? And how the only response that the Israeli Navy got back to their offer was cursing in Arabic and English? Funny how no one in our media outlets reported those little facts, eh?
Ayalon: Flotilla was 'an armada of hate and violence'

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said that the flotilla of ships "was an armada of hate and violence."

Speaking at a Jerusalem press conference on Monday morning. "It was a premeditated and outrageous provocation" and its organizers had ties to global Jihad, al Qaida and Hamas, said Ayalon.

"Their intent was violent, their methods were violent and their results were unfortunately violent," Ayalon said.

"Israel regrets the loss of life and did everything it could to avoid this outcome," Ayalon stressed, adding that Israel had offered to transport the humanitarian cargo on board the ship to Gaza.

"The organizers on the ship did not heed the calls of our forces this morning to peacefully follow them and bring a peaceful closure to this event," said Ayalon, iterating that the successful arrival of the flotilla in Gaza would have created "a corridor of arms smuggling."

Apparently the troops that repelled to the bridge deck of the first ship boarded were attacked by Arab speaking men who tossed a couple of soldiers down to the main deck, attacked with bats and metal bars, stripped a couple of soldiers of their helmets and firearms which were then fired by these men who turn out to be from the Turkish IHH, thought to be aligned with Al Quida.

If ships carrying unknown cargo were about to enter Canadian water Would not we as Canadians demand to know what the cargo was?
I realize the situation is not that cut and dried
I feel the Israel soldiers were ambushed and forced to defend themselves
Israel has a duty to protect their citizens

FYI - the flotilla was in international waters when Israeli commandos stormed it. I'm no expert on high-seas law, but the right to defend one's vessel from hostile takeover may be ok under international law.

I would hope so. But the right to defend one's country against hostile takeover/attack is also allowed under international law. Though to be perhaps more honest, this is one of those situations where "law" doesn't matter that much. If there isn't any overarching power between the two disputants; a power that both recognize as legitimate, and that can enforce decisions, then standard ideas about law don't really apply. Some might say that standard ideas about morality don't really apply.

As you can tell... I'm in a Hobbesian mood.

I will be interested to hear more about what happened. From what I've heard thus far, it sounds like a situation where everyone was doing what's rational from their own perspective. Israel would understandably want to interdict supplies on their way to a group that is hostile to them. People on a ship in international waters (or anywhere) would want to repel an armed force boarding their vessel. If an armed force finds itself attacked, with perhaps weapons taken from them and used against them, the armed force could be expected to respond with... much more force.

I wonder what each side expected would happen, given their actions...

It's not surprising that Israel would attempt to board this vessel. I guess since the whole Hitler fiasco, they are a little suspicious of people who aren't friendly towards them. Go figure eh!? And the Islamic fundamentalist movement, now worldwide, isn't helping matters any. Maybe instead of being so critical of Israel, the world should attempt to convert Muslims from hatred and their belief in a false prophet who himself promoted and partook in war, death, rape, etc to the Bible believing words of Jesus Christ, the Son of the only True God.
