The REAL "Fake Lake" numbers released... $57k

Once again, the media does it's best to make the Tories look bad... but when the REAL numbers come out, we see it's all just Liberal spin.

$57,000 as part of a major Canadian marketing strategy, designed to promote Canada to the rest of the world, is not the "big deal" that the media made it out to be yesterday. Besides, considering that tourism is one of our biggest industries, $57,000 is a deal. By promoting this iconic "Canadian landscape", we're bound to bring in a whole lot more that $57,000 in new tourism dollars... and I'm betting it will bring in more than the $1.9 million that the whole media centre is costing us.

Now that the light of reality has been shone on this whole thing, I take back my "Lake Mistake-a" crack from yesterday... it starting to look more like money well spent.

    So you are ok with:

    - spending $57,000 on a fake lake? and something like $40,000 for the jumbotron images of Muskoka that go with it?
    - $2 million on a media centre that will disappear immediately after?
    - $600,000 for a steamboat that will not be ready until after the summit?
    - $20,000 on a gazebo in a town no one at the summit will visit?
    - $200,000 on a sidewalk to nowhere, 80km from the summit?
    - $200,000 on a toilet in another town?
    - something like $200,000 on flowers?

The list of waste and largesse and pork goes on and on and on.

This is the Conservatives' version of "money well spent"? To say nothing about the incompetence of a government that promises $179 million for security only to see it come in at over $1 billion.

If Stephen Harper of 2005 visited Stephen Harper of 2010, he'd start up another Reform Party.

I wonder if the media with make their mistake about the numbers clear and well as those MPs who took the government to task over it?

So that being said, that it would only cost $57,000 to build the replica lake, is there a point to building a 'media centre' that would cost up to $2 million?

I'm curious what your reaction would be if the Liberals spent this much on a fake lake. Or paving sidewalks. Or a steamship.

    I suspect you'd be apoplectic.

Isn't there a real lake, at no cost to tax payers, only about 100 m from the site of the media centre? (That would be Lake Ontario.)

And, what about the rest of the $1.2 billion budget?

"...it starting [sic] to look more like money well spent." Yeah, right.

Many of us want a smaller gov't, less spending.

In this case local workers, local materials used to create a set for an international audience.

We are all guilty of "sweating the small stuff" too much from time to time.

Alright then... say we make some last minute cuts, and spend less than the current amount on security for the G20 Summit... and Obama gets assassinated right here on Canadian soil. How do you think THAT would go for us on the international stage, hummm?

I have no issues with spending on security... in my opinion, we should be sending the bill to all the wacko-lefty organizations that have forced us to spend that kind of dough to keep them out. (since most of the costs is due to protesters, not terrorists)

Those wackly left are already being funded by taxpayers.

We could recoup our losses with a reality show after we dump the anarchists in Iran.

We could put a GPS tracker on their ankles and start on-line betting how long before the imadinnerjacket thugs help these activists return home with free flights.

    CC,

Are you suggesting the Iranian security forces won't show restraint and kindness to these activists?

Clearly you don't believe the falsehoods from the Western media.

Imadinnerjacked won the election and is beloved as is the theocracy.

The millions that protested, chanting "Death to Dictator" was not translated correctly.

It was corrected 4 more years of the left!

Doesn't a 30 second commercial cost close to that in prime time? What are all those "Ontario, there's no place like this" commercials running round the clock on every channel costing us? I bet it's a lot more than $57 Grand. Probably millions.

CBC Newsworld is running the title "fake lake gate" to discuss the ENTIRE summit. They are misleading. G8 or G20 are not making their way into the headline.

I'd have a problem with 2 million being spent on a 10 cm deep pond (calling it a lake is misleading), but 2 million for the entire media pavillion seems about right. Kevin Page thinks the budget is logical and responsible. Don't Liberals call him the Oracle of Ottawa?

    Seriously?

So... the replica lake and sidewalk to nowhere are security features?

Even just looking at "real" security costs, what matters is HOW the money is spent. You'd get more bang for your security buck in a place other than Toronto. E.g., Kananaskis.

Having experience in costing exhibits tradeshows the two million seems modest for The Travel Pavillion for a backdrop/ entertaining the Global Press of 1,800 reporters.

The media and opposition are preoccupied in criticizing the policy initiatives of the Government without checking the facts.
Here is a link to some tradeshow costs.
