Warren SUPPORTS scrapping the long-form census

Warren made this interesting statement on his blog last night, and only now does it all make sense... he supports the Harper government's move to scrap the long-form census, citing privacy issues as the reason for his support. (note, I said "supports the Harper government's MOVE", not "supports the government"... a distinction I think he'd appreciate my pointing out)

Last night, he said ‎"I’m not involved with Team Iggy, for reasons that would shortly become become crystal clear, and nor are they involved with me." PERHAPS this is what he's referring to, because today he posted the link to the following video: (of course, another theory is that he's about to sign with SunTV NEWS, but we'll just have to wait and see...)

I'm neither here nor there about this issue.

I am surprised that in all the opinion pieces in the last couple of weeks not one of them (as far as I know)have actually provided a copy of the form to let their audiences read it for themselves.

It is offensive to force someone to describe their children as White/black/mixed race etc. What is "progressive" about that?

I learned back in the early eighties what my parents income was because I had to fill out a portion of that form. It was a breach of their privacy.

Further, I would dismiss the arguement that only forced compliance gives accurate results (results BTW that are years out of date). Good science and math can adjust results to be accurate.

The Star has already figured out that some groups(always vulnerable in their view of course)are less likely to fill out the form and are therefore going to be under represented. They seem to feel that expert statiticians cannot figure this out on their own and make adjustments accordingly.

All polling is similar. Granted it is usually much simpler in scope but the polling firms must figure out which demographic is hanging up more frequently and then publish their results. They are often bang on and are only polling 1 in 10,000 instead of 1 in 5.

The logic is pure BS.It is dishonest.

Obviously, any government policy decision has to be basesd on many considerations. And so it is with this one. As usual, the many special interest groups can easily put out statements condemning a policy which breaks with the status quo. But what about the Libertarians out there ? They obviously have no spokesperson.

But the only thing the media and Opps REALLY cares about, is how this will play out politically. Nothing surprises me in politics. But good luck to the enemy in simplifying their "sampling" argument to the point where voters can understand it, and agree with it.

Our narrative is pretty easy to understand--people shouldn't be coerced, under threat of jail time and/or big fines, to provide sensitive personal information.

Where else can someone who needs the information get it? There are many places that compile information on various subjects. Revenue Collection Agency comes to mind as does Canada Post. Why is it always the government that has to do something for the moochers?

I think Stephen Taylor had the long form at his link a few days ago, and specifically mentioned some of the questions.
Having had to fill out the long form a couple of time, and being threatened with jail by the census taker for not answering some questions. I told her to fill in any blanks on my form, and how did she know unless she opened it.
Guess I should have gone to the Privacy Commissioner as libs say only 3 complaints were ever filed.
Next time we got a long one we did fill it out, but not honestly. Zeros made a lot of answers to financial questions.
Profanity was put down as a second language spoken by hubby.
The first thing he does when we get the form is black out every word in French.
And every census we have received during 56 yr we have answered Canadian for ethnic questions. When told that was not acceptable he told the lady, well, add Canadian you A@@H@@@.
    Waiting for the next one.

I would support making ALL Canadians fill out the big census form, but that is not likely a popular opinion. I'm a stats junkie, I'd rather ask too much than not enough.

The theories being floated that the Tories are doing this to deny services to poor people are insane.

theories 'Tories are doing this to deny services to poor people '

    Laughable, eh.
Somehow data collected 5 years earlier is essential to service the here and now needs of the poor.

Churches need stats? I thought they just asked their congregations to come forward if you need or know of anyone who needs help.

These organizations that can't function without the census, must use it for other purposes (where do the rich folk live) info, not helping the poor.

It is sad to see that people who have no understanding of statistics are driving the bus on this issue. The long form is 1. CHEAPER, 2. ANONYMOUS 3. the ONLY source of accurate information and 4. almost universally accepted - 2 complaints in 6 million?????

Stop beating the wrong drum here, people. Pick on whatever other agenda you want but the arguments put forth on this and most other forums are simply incorrect. Remove the theoretical jail threat and MOVE ON.

And in particular to Wilson, please think BEFORE you write.
